There’s an old saying that spiritual teachings and the spiritual teacher are like “the finger pointing to the moon”, implying the student should watch the moon, not the finger. I’ve always thought this applies to all types of communication: Rather than focus on the communicator, the focus should really be on that to which the communicator is pointing.
Aside from the philosophical and spiritual wisdom of this saying, I’ve always liked “finger pointing to the moon” because, being rather self-effacing, I prefer to stay in the background and downplay (or avoid discussing, if possible!) any role I have in pointing to the moon. The saying gives me a good way to explain how I see my work, yet I’ve used it also as a justification to avoid talking about myself and putting myself in front of the public. However, as a communications professional and a bit of a geek living in the age of social networking, at a time in history where we, as individuals and communities, are in a position to affect the course of humanity perhaps more than ever before, I realize I need to stand before my own finger sometimes, and put myself in public view, not just for my own professional good, but to contribute the causes about which I am passionate: Uplifting women; helping individuals and communities consider what guides their thoughts, and how their thoughts guide them and create their world; and the role the media plays in these areas.
You’ll hear more about me in upcoming posts, but expect the focus of this blog to be on the topics I just mentioned. Of course, there will be occasional diversions, most likely to include bits of humor, how-to and instructional posts on social media and communications (these have been moved to the Practical + Geeky area of my business site), and other odds and ends.
Too much writing about myself: I look forward to hearing from you, getting to know you, receiving your feedback, and communicating, amongst ourselves and within the greater community.
