Ever since I’ve been a kid, I’ve been fascinated by and studied how we’re affected emotionally, physically, spiritually, and culturally by what and how we think; how our thoughts and actions are influenced by various forces, including the media, authority figures (religious leaders, parents, teachers, etc.) as well as what we choose to think; and how this all relates to the position of women and the downtrodden in the world.
In modern society, we’ve generally been encouraged, influenced, and taught to conform to a norm that does not bring about the best for the individual, community, or world, on any level: physical, emotional, or spiritual. However, the same elements attempting to direct us to thinking and acting in non-compassionate, non-inclusive and destructive ways can be used positively. And this is what I strive to do: Use that which influences us in a positive manner, so that we consider and move with heart and intellect, act consciously, make a wider perspective visible, and work towards attaining our highest good, individually and collectively.
As you might expect, the rise of social media has been exciting for me precisely because of its influence and potential to change the world for the better. While there are still many obstacles to overcome, and, as can all tools, social media and the internet can be used for destructive as well as constructive purposes, I do believe we can consciously choose to use the tools of the internet and social networking for common good. Properly used, the tools can bring community to the isolated groups and individuals working to advance worthy causes, align and strengthen those causes, and give voice to that which has been overlooked by the mainstream media. Aggregated, these factors can drive the shift in understanding, attitude, action, and being needed to change the path of the world and its people.
More thoughts soon. I look forward to yours.
