The following chart, posted on The Blind Project’s blog, powerfully presents the scale of sex trafficking and prostitution.
Aside from the other mind-boggling figures, this chart reveals the violence facing prostitutes, and the cloak of invisibility the media places over prostitutes and prostitute-related violence.
For years, industry and media reports have ranked fishing as the world’s most dangerous job. Recent statistics state 129 (on the chart) to 112 (in other reports) fishers per 100,000 are killed on the job each year. However, more prostitutes than fishers are killed each year — 204 deaths per 100,000 prostitutes — yet prostitution is not even mentioned or considered in mainstream “most dangerous jobs” reports.
Prostitution is the world’s most dangerous job, and perhaps the world’s most invisible job, especially when media and government officials refuse to acknowledge the numbers and violence of sex trafficking.
