Today is World AIDS Day, when many groups and individuals highlight their work towards a cure and treatments for the disease. However, much of the scourge of AIDS comes not from the disease itself, but from humans. From gay-bashers in the U.S. to the fearful in Africa, there are many who persecute and shun those afflicted with AIDS. Worse yet, countless women and children are abused by those with AIDS, encouraged by religious and other leaders. While the eradication of the disease would be ideal, eradicating the abuse of women and children perpetrated by AIDS is critical. . . .
1261040258_74a53db110Women are inundated with news propagated by a male-dominated, male-centric media – yet most women don’t take the time to step outside the bounds of network news to tune into the voice of women in the media. If women make the effort to pay attention to women, as seen, heard, and reported through the women’s media, the world can change for the better – for you as an individual, for women in general, and for everyone. We know women and men are different. How this difference shapes women’s reporting of news, and how the reporting of news can drive change in the world, is profound. . . .
Elinor Ostrom, co-recipient of this year’s Nobel Laureate in Economics, has been the subject of a flurry of media excitement, yet the attention given Ostrom and her work is only beginning: As more people begin to understand what Ostrom has said, the influence of her words and work will be felt more greatly – especially by women. The benefit will not come because Ostrom is the first woman awarded the Nobel for Economics – a fact the highlighted by the press during initial reports of the award, most likely because of lack of publically-known information about Ostrom and her work. As the media and public have shifted from focusing on “the first woman” to actually looking at Ostrom’s contributions to economics, the practicality of what she says has become apparent. Reporters, writers, and the public are beginning to understand Ostrom’s work and realize how vital it is to the world right now. . . .
Women and women’s issues are generally overlooked or trivialized in the mainstream media, as is the ability of women to lead positive change in the world. Why this is, and the effect the dearth of women in the media has on our culture and thinking, will be the topic of other posts. For now, I’d like to present 10 (plus one) substantial sources of news about women. . . .
While I can't say "I've been thinking about Eleanor Roosevelt this week" as anything new, as ER is one of my heroes and I think of her a good bit in general, I've been musing about her in relation to blogging this week. What many forget is that ER unfailingly wrote a nationally-published column six days a week. From 1935 until just before her passing in 1962, ER wrote "My Day", no matter where she was in the world, or what she was doing. . . .
